In The Riding: October 14th
It’s always a pleasure to welcome Ministers up to Thunder Bay.
I was honoured to have Education Minister Stephen Lecce make a trip with me to Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute where we interacted with students and teachers involved in the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program.
The program allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
I understand that we have unique challenges in the North, but with those challenges come solutions. We need to recognize that the circumstances here are different than in southern parts of the province, and it’s my job to advocate on behalf of our community and our schools to make sure that what we need here is understood. It’s a lot different than just going down to Toronto and saying what we need. We need to explain why we need it.
We also learned a lot of history as part of a class field trip to Fort William Historical Park alongside students from École Secondaire Catholique De La Verendrye.
We also had a visit from the President of the Treasury Board Prabmeet Sakaria as he met with several local officials to discuss emergency planning, preparation and responses.
I look forward to other Ministers making Thunder Bay part of their future travel plans.
I was also excited to see the City and District of Thunder Bay receive an Ontario Health Team, which is much needed in my riding.
