Ontario Helping Colleges and Universities Build Better Facilities in Thunder Bay – Atikokan
$6,484,934 investment ensuring Lakehead University and Confederation College have modern facilities and learning tools

Thunder Bay — The Ontario government is continuing to deliver high-quality post secondary education by investing a total of $6,484,934 in Lakehead University and Confederation College. This funding will allow both institutions to upgrade buildings and acquire the latest learning tools, ensuring students receive the skills they need to succeed in their future careers.
“Our government is building the workforce of tomorrow – one that is adaptable, cutting-edge and innovative,” said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges and Universities. “By investing in state-of-the-art buildings and learning equipment, we are ensuring Ontario’s students are equipped to thrive as leaders in the modern economy.”
Funding Breakdown:
- Confederation College: $2,709,900 to IMD Lab equipment such as iMac mini stations to support the media arts – multimedia production program. MLA/MLS Equipment such as tissue processors to support the medical laboratory assistant program. Building Automation System upgrade. Roof replacement.
- Lakehead University: $3,778,034 to modernize STEM instructional spaces including labs, a computer lab, and network infrastructure in order to enhance collaborative and flexible/hybrid/remote spaces with upgraded AV/IT and synchronous/asynchronous, interactive, and real-time delivery. It will also benefit the Faculties of Science and Environmental Studies and Health and Behavioural Sciences while supporting micro-credentials. STEM curriculum includes health sciences nursing, veterinary medicine, engineering, computer science, chemistry, biology.

Our government continues to deliver a world-class post secondary education in Ontario, investing over $5 billion in the sector every year. This investment is part of a larger $228 million investment to improve infrastructure at Ontario colleges and universities.
QUICK FACTS
- $196 million is being provided through the Facilities Renewal Program in 2024-25 to help publicly assisted colleges and universities with the maintenance, repairs and renewal of existing facilities.
- $21.5 million is being provided through the College Equipment and Renewal Fund in 2024-25 to help colleges buy and renew instructional equipment and learning resources.
- $10.5 million is being provided through the Training Equipment and Renewal Fund in 2024-25 to help universities renew and buy modern, state-of-the art equipment and learning resources.
