Province providing funding to support Alternative Level of Care and Patient Flow initiatives

Thunder Bay — To support Ontario’s innovative models of care, MPP Holland announced $2,686,600 in funding through the Alternative Levels of Care (ALC) and Patient Flow initiatives to three organizations in the Thunder Bay region. Funding will be provided to Wesway, the City of Thunder Bay, and the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay to deliver respite care, caregiver support, and support the Meals on Wheels program.

“This funding from the Ministry of Health is imperative to help support Ontario’s new innovative models of care”, said Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay – Atikokan. “The funding will be used by the Wesway, the Meals on Wheels Thunder Bay, and the Alzheimer’s Society of Thunder Bay to assist with a program to divert patients by leveraging current Community Support Services. This will enable people to stay at home instead of being hospitalized and help remove some of the pressures on our hospitals and emergency rooms.”

“We are thankful for the additional funding. As the needs of our population increase, this additional funding has allowed us to continue to meet the needs of Thunder Bay’s most vulnerable by providing nutritious meals 7 days/week.” Heather Mihichuk, Program Manager at Meals on Wheels Thunder Bay.

“This funding that the Alzheimer Society Thunder Bay has received has been so important to our clients and care partners. Knowing more in home support is available to our registered clients and to alleviate pressures off of our hospitals is vital to our health care system” Pamela Gerrie, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Society Thunder Bay.

This funding is part of the Ontario government’s $131 million investment to reduce ALC cases across the province and support patient flow from hospitals to more appropriate settings, ensuring patients and their families can connect to the care they need, closer to home.
