Shuniah — The Ontario government is investing $175,000 to protect jobs, upgrade and expand the MacGregor Recreation Rink Shack in Shuniah. This investment is part of the province’s $200 million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF), a provincewide initiative that helps communities revitalize local facilities, grow the economy and promote active, healthy living across Ontario.

“The Pavilion Hub is a shining example of what happens when communities and government work together to create spaces that bring people together,” said Kevin Holland, MPP for Thunder Bay—Atikokan. “By investing in accessible and inclusive recreation infrastructure, our government is helping strengthen Shuniah’s sense of community, support active living, and ensure residents of all ages can connect, play, and thrive for generations to come.”

“At a time when Ontario families are facing rising costs due to tariffs, our government is proud to support organizations focused on delivering better services for people while breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for children and young people,” said Neil Lumsden, Minister of Sport. “With investments in infrastructure like this, we are protecting Ontario jobs, strengthening our communities and building a more resilient and self-reliant economy.”

“This NOHFC investment in the Conmee Township will provide great benefits to our community. The rink at the community centre is a well-used gathering place for residents, hosting summer and winter sports, community events, and celebrations,” said the Hon. Kevin Holland, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thunder Bay Atikokan. “I’m glad to see this investment helping ensure the community can continue to enjoy and make use of this important community space.”

CSRIF is a key part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario workers, businesses and families by unleashing the economy and getting more shovels in the ground, with a historic $200 billion investment to build highways, hospitals, transit, schools and other critical infrastructure across the province

“The rehabilitation and expansion of the MacGregor Recreation Rink Shack represents a key investment in enhancing accessibility, safety, and year-round recreational opportunities for all ages. The new facility, to be known as the Pavilion Hub, will improve accessibility, programming capacity and community engagement. Planned works include barrier-free washrooms and ramp access, expanded changeroom facilities, new concession and service counter, dedicated equipment storage space and integrated water reservoir system to supply the outdoor rink surface,” says Mayor Wendy Landry.  “For Shuniah, it will strengthen both the physical and social fabric of our community – ensuring residents can gather, play and celebrate together in a safe and accessible environment for years to come.”
