Grand Opening of New EMS Base in the Municipality of Shuniah

May 24th, 2024

Shuniah – Following the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2023, Superior North Emergency Medical Services (SNEMS) has now opened the new facility at 1801 Lakeshore Drive in the Municipality of Shuniah. Featuring two drive-through ambulance bays and a new area for paramedics to rest while on duty, this new facility will offer EMS staff a safe, clean, and modern environment from which to carry out their duties.

“It is a pleasure to be here today to celebrate this milestone in the history of the collaboration between Municipality of Shuniah, the City of Thunder Bay and Superior North EMS. This new EMS station symbolizes the innovation and progress of emergency medical services. This building embodies the advancement of the Paramedic profession and provides valuable operations infrastructure for all those who may require emergency medical services, said Shane Muir, Chief of Superior North EMS.

“Our paramedics are true professionals that dedicate their lives to the service of others. In my opinion, it is one of the most noble and demanding careers one could endeavour to achieve. Now we stand together to support our paramedics by providing facilities and equipment that allows our staff to perform their duties to the highest standards.

I want to thank our paramedics, the Municipality of Shuniah, the City of Thunder Bay, and all those who worked tirelessly to complete this project. It is an honour to be here celebrating the Grand Opening of one of the most modern buildings of EMS operations in Northwestern Ontario. I also would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication from all the those providing emergency medical response as we celebrate Paramedic Services Week.”

“This new facility represents more than just bricks and mortar; it signifies our collective commitment to supporting those who support us in our times of greatest need. It is a testament to the value we place on the health, safety, and efficiency of our emergency services. I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who made this project possible from the planners and builders, to the community members and leaders who supported this vision. Your hard work and dedication have brought us to this proud moment.”
– Kevin Holland, MPP Thunder Bay-Atikokan

The base was recommended for replacement as part of the 2021-2030 SNEMS Master Plan, which also included the construction of a new base in Kakabeka Falls that was completed in 2021. This new base in Shuniah will support the Municipality of Shuniah, Township of Dorion, and several unincorporated areas.

“The Municipality of Shuniah is both excited and proud of its new Shuniah Ambulance Base. This new facility supports both local and district needs when it comes to providing paramedics with the valued resources needed for them to perform their job and respond to 911 emergencies.”
– Wendy Landry, Mayor of Shuniah

“The new ambulance base in Shuniah was a great collaboration between the city of Thunder Bay and Shuniah with the support of the provincial government. The new facility was a huge improvement for the valued EMS staff to provide them with modern working and staging area to continue their valued work throughout the community and area for years to come.”
